Your perspective impacts everything. It determines whether you view a day of missed expectations as a failure or a learning experience. It’s the difference maker of a good or bad day at work. James Baldwin said, “The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way a person looks at reality, then you can change it.” Is there something in your life that’s begging you to take another look? As individuals, we all have our own perspective on life. It’s how we’re wired and shaped by our environment. You...Read More
A few years back, my husband turned his passion for basketball into an opportunity to coach a high school girls’ basketball team. Although he had the practical knowledge and mechanics of the game, the skeptical group of girls didn’t automatically follow him. Yes, they enjoyed hearing his lively stories of the glory days as a high school basketball star, but to them that was ancient history. Some of them saw that encouraging father or cool big brother they never had, but that still wasn’t enough for them to follow him. Have you ever been in a situation where you...Read More
This past Mother’s Day, a friend bought me the nicest journal I’ve ever owned – leather bound with gold-edged pages. As beautiful as it was, it’s what’s written on the cover that makes it so special. These are the words I’d yell out just before informing my sister with the words of defeat, “You sank my battleship!” This popular Hasbro board game was a favorite of ours when we were kids. I remember cleverly trying to position my fleet to avoid a predictable pattern. Somehow random guesses of B2, C4, H8, I2, etc. would eventually reveal the placement of my carrier ship, and it was downhill from there. Although it was a game of luck, it also was a game of strategy, skill, and a good poker face. All...Read More
One of my favorite movies as a child was “The Wizard of Oz”. Although I loved Dorothy and her little red shoes, I could particularly identify with the Cowardly Lion. He was awkward, and because of the way he looked, people had an expectation of how he should be. Everyone expected him to be courageous; after all, he was “king of the jungle”! I was at least 4-6 inches taller than most of boys and girls in my class, and I wore big glasses. I was definitely awkward and often shied away from doing anything that bought too much...Read More
