A Cup of Cold Water

A few years back I attended a memorial service for a homeless man. Despite having lived a tough life, Leroy was a very sweet man with a big heart and an unforgettable personality that deeply touched every person he met. At one point in the service people were invited to come to the microphone and share stories about Leroy.

One Race One Day

The large sanctuary is dimly lit, all skin tones blended in shadows in the intimate atmosphere of the OneRace OneDay Summit. Singer Montell Jordan worships with a team of musicians on the darkened stage and their rollicking melodies and rhythms become an anthem as hundreds of voices join together to declare: “There’s an army rising up, There’s an army rising up, to break every chain, break every chain.”

AWAKE in Honduras by Christina Moon

“It’s so green… It’s so green!” was all I could say from the moment I saw Honduras for the first time from the airplane window.  Our team was greeted with an endless expanse of rivers and mountains and forests, and I couldn’t stop marveling

Haiti-Poverty and Beauty Intertwined by Toni Kelecheck

Haiti is a country of great beauty and devastating poverty intertwined so tightly; you can’t see one without the other. This is the best description I can give of Haiti. There is so much to love such as the rugged beauty of the coast and the way the clouds sit just above the mountains like a blanket. The big smiles on mahogany skinned faces and laughter of children getting fresh mangos from the trees. However, there is a dark side to Haiti. A lack of life’s necessities like food, clean water, employment and medical care. Things that we take for granted on a daily basis. Some mothers resort to feeding their children mud cookies when food is scarce, and bellies are empty.  It’s a reality I first learned of five years ago on my first mission trip to Haiti.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Creator by Caleb Halstead

It is said by many that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” However, one might also rightly state “beauty is in the eye of the creator.” These phrases couple together to help paint a picture which reveals a source and a recipient. This powerful implication permits and draws the beholder to seek a creator.

Newton Author and Conyers Chocolatier Partner for “Books and Chocolates” Book Signing Event

A Newton County resident, Brooks is a retired administrator with many published works to her credit including a biocritical study, training materials, and book reviews; however, Treasures in Secret Places is her debut into the religious genre. Treasures in Secret Places bridges the gap in the devotional niche by addressing both universal issues of faith and real issues of unique concern to women of color, such as racism, sexism, and politics.

Everyone Valued and Welcomed

Local Outreach, Relationships, and Community. That is the heart of what we do at AWAKE. We work towards showing love in practical ways. Being in Olde Town, we have the privilege of getting to know our community and all the different people who make it up, on a personal level. Whether it’s a judge from across the street at the courthouse or the man who lives under a nearby bridge and walks to his job daily at Goodwill, we try to make everyone feel welcomed and valued.

Childlike Love

Someone once told me that the two purest things in the world are childhood and marriage. This is because, in both, we are completely unhindered! Maybe we haven’t all been married but we have all been children. Do you remember, as a child, playing tag? Or maybe cops and robbers?

Every Stranger has a Story

Human beings have been telling stories for thousands of years. Storytelling is an innate trait which humans have actually used to process life. Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist said, “The human mind is a story processor, not a logic processor.” Our minds were clearly created to tell stories and to hear stories.
